How an adjustable bed works
An adjustable bed is a motorised base that replaces your standard bed base. The base is split into sections that move independently, so you can lift the head, the legs, or both, and save the positions you use most. Most models are controlled with a handheld or wireless remote.
The main types
- Simple adjustable beds cover the essentials: head and foot adjustment in an easy-to-use base. A great choice if you mainly want to sit up comfortably in bed.
- Massage adjustable beds add built-in massage and, on selected models, features such as lumbar support and pillow tilt for extra comfort when sitting up.
- Hi-lo and scissor lift beds raise and lower the whole bed as well as adjusting head and feet. This makes getting in and out easier and helps carers assist at a comfortable working height, which is why they're popular for home care.
Do you need a special mattress?
Yes. A mattress on an adjustable bed needs to bend with the base again and again without being damaged or losing its support. Many standard mattresses, particularly those with stiff edges or rigid spring systems, aren't designed for this and can wear out quickly or feel uncomfortable when the bed is raised.

Things to consider before you buy
- Size: for couples, a split base lets each side adjust independently, so you can each choose your own position.
- Height: check the height of the bed with the mattress on top, especially if getting in and out is a concern.
- Your existing bed frame: many adjustable bases can sit inside a bed frame, but it's worth checking the fit.
- Features you'll really use: massage and extra motors are great if you'll use them, but a simple base may be all you need.
