A lift and recline chair gently raises you forward to a standing position, then lets you lean back to relax, all at the press of a button. For anyone who finds getting in and out of a standard armchair hard work, the right chair can make everyday life noticeably easier. Here's what to look at when choosing one.
1. How many motors do you need?
Single motor chairs move the backrest and footrest together in one motion. They're simple to use, with fewer buttons to think about, and are often the most affordable option.
Dual and multi motor chairs let you move the backrest and footrest independently, so you can raise your legs while sitting upright or recline your back without lifting your feet. Some multi motor models add powered headrest or lumbar adjustment for finer control over your position.
If you mainly want help standing up and a comfortable recline, a single motor chair may be all you need. If you spend long periods in the chair or need specific positions, it's worth looking at more motors.
2. Getting the size right
Fit is the most important part of choosing a lift chair, and it's where many people go wrong. A chair that's too big or too small can be uncomfortable and harder to get in and out of.
- Seat height: when seated, your feet should rest flat on the floor with your knees at a comfortable angle.
- Seat depth: you should be able to sit back fully with a small gap between the seat edge and the back of your knees.
- Seat width: there should be room to sit comfortably without feeling squeezed or sliding sideways.
Many chairs come in more than one size. Several models in our range are available in standard and petite sizes, so shorter users can sit with proper support.
3. Space-saving wall hugger designs
A standard recliner needs clearance behind it to lean back. Wall hugger chairs move forward as they recline, so they can sit much closer to the wall. They're a great choice for smaller living rooms and apartments.
4. Comfort and everyday use
- Controls: look for a handset with large, clearly marked buttons that's easy to hold.
- Upholstery: think about how easy the fabric will be to clean and how it will feel for long periods of sitting.
- Weight capacity: check that the chair is rated comfortably above the user's weight.
- Placement: you'll need a power point nearby, so plan where the chair will go.
5. NDIS participants welcome
Sleep Doctor Dee Why is a registered NDIS provider, and we work with NDIA-managed, plan-managed and self-managed participants. If a lift chair is part of your NDIS plan, bring your plan details and any recommendations from your occupational therapist, and our team will help you find a suitable chair.
6. Sit before you buy
The only way to be sure a lift chair fits is to sit in it, stand up with it and try the recline. At Sleep Doctor Dee Why we carry lift and recline chairs from Pride Mobility, Theorem and Mlily, including single and multi motor models, wall hugger designs and petite sizes.
